Bathroom Drainage, Floor Falls and Standing Water

Standing water is an observation that needs location, timing and test conditions before it becomes a repair decision.

What this means

Standing water is an observation that needs location, timing and test conditions before it becomes a repair decision.

Water remaining on a bathroom floor may relate to local surface fall, finish irregularity, outlet condition, debris, drainage response or the observation conditions. Record the visible result precisely and keep drainage and concealed waterproofing questions separate.

Practical sequence

Eight checks for bathroom drainage and standing water

The sequence keeps floor fall, outlet response, retained water and concealed-system questions from being treated as one diagnosis.

01

Identify the wet area and outlet

Record the bathroom, shower zone, floor trap, doorway and nearby fixtures using an overview and useful detail.

02

Separate the three questions

Distinguish water direction, outlet response and local residual water after drainage.

03

Preserve the conditions

State the starting surface, how water entered, the amount if known, when drainage began and when residual water was recorded.

04

Avoid creating a hazard

Use only an authorised controlled method. Do not block an outlet, flood an unconfirmed area or introduce water near electricity.

05

Record direction and timing

Show the outlet, visible water path, actual timing and retained-water location, plus the instrument and reading where applicable.

06

Separate waterproofing conclusions

Slow drainage does not prove membrane failure, and a short successful flow does not prove concealed waterproofing performance.

07

Check local or recurring behaviour

Compare the same area under suitable normal-use conditions and record recurrence, nearby leakage signs and repair history.

08

Choose the next investigation

Use a defined repair discussion, recheck, plumber or waterproofing specialist according to the evidence question.

How it works

From a wet floor to a proportionate next action

01

Locate

Connect the retained water to the exact surface, outlet, doorway and nearby fixtures.

02

Observe

Use a safe authorised method and record direction, timing and actual conditions.

03

Separate

Keep surface fall, outlet response, leakage and concealed waterproofing as distinct questions.

04

Escalate

Choose repair, recheck or the appropriate specialist investigation based on the evidence.

What this helps you decide

What makes the bathroom observation usable

  • Describe standing water without jumping to a concealed diagnosis
  • Separate surface fall, outlet response and waterproofing questions
  • Choose repair, recheck or specialist investigation proportionately
Evidence and boundaries

What makes the bathroom observation usable

  • Exact room, wet zone, outlet and nearby reference points
  • Overview and detail showing surface and outlet context
  • Starting condition, water source and actual timing
  • Visible flow direction and retained-water location
  • Authorised instrument, method and reading where applicable
  • Recurrence, nearby leakage signs and earlier repair history

Does every small puddle mean the bathroom floor is defective?

Not automatically. Location, extent, surface condition, method, timing and the applicable reference all matter.

Does a water-flow check prove the waterproofing membrane is sound?

No. Surface drainage observation and concealed waterproofing performance are different questions and require different evidence.

Can DPM deliberately clog the drain to test it?

No. The inspection should not create an unsafe condition or deliberately obstruct drainage. Only the authorised method and actual site conditions are recorded.

What if water backs up from the floor trap?

Stop the test, prevent further damage and record the observed response. A suitable plumbing investigation may be required.

Can the floor fall be checked with a level?

Where authorised and suitable, an instrument can support the observation. Keep the location, method, reading and applicable acceptance reference with the finding.
